WM FRIENDS: Sophie Monet

· · Comments

We recently had the privilege of interviewing jewelry designer Sophie Monet. Living in Venice, California, Sophie handcrafts timeless pieces out of precious stones mixed with exotic wood and metals. Using sustainable materials whenever possible, she's our kind of girl, and we are proud to carry her gorgeous line here in the shop! Get to know her through the interview below, and shop her collection here.

What inspired you to venture into jewelry designing?

I grew up around a woodshop so I’ve always had a knack for deconstructing and making things. It was naturally a place I could go and be creative. When I was living in New York during college my creative fashion sense really inspired me to dream big and start my own company.

Mixing wood with precious stone & metals is what makes your jewelry unique. What is something we may not know about your process?

People always think I make one piece of jewelry at a time. They ask me “how log did it take you to make this?” It’s the hardest question to answer because when I’m in the woodshop I’m constantly making multiple pieces at once. I try to make a handful of blanks (such as rings) then I can change add stones and cut the wood as it’s ordered.

What's on your fall playlist?

I love listening to the Noon Pacific weekly mixtape. It’s an amazing app that uploads the best new songs every week from a Frank Ocean remix to folky pop songs. It’s a great way to discover new bands.

What is it that makes your jewelry fit so well with the WM vibe?

I love the eclectic, warm and natural feeling of WM goods. I think Portland is a great place for artisanal brands like Sophie Monet because the community really appreciates handmade goods. I love seeing a group of independent and emerging brands in a one stop shop for everything you need.

What are your favorite pieces from your collection?

I’m obsessed with earrings right now. I love that they have the ability to amplify any basic outfit. The Pod Earrings are definitely a go to.

Do you feel that your jewelry reflects your personal style / in which ways?

I really have two sides to my style. On one hand I’m always trying to be comfortable and wear classic styles and on the other hand I love to get dressed up! I think the jewelry collection is really a combo of both. Its bold, but easy to wear.

What is your go-to coffee order?

Cortado

One thing you can not leave home without?

My Garrett Leight Sunglasses. I’m a California girl.

What does your typical day look like?

I start my day with an espresso made in my stove top Bialetti. I’ll workout then head to the studio and spend my day multi tasking between the woodshop and office. Shooting off emails or heading downtown to the jewelry district on a gem hunt.

Where do your ideas for new collections come from?

My travels. I love day dreaming about my next trip somewhere. I love it almost too much, that I'll end up booking a last minute trip and falling in love with the architecture, food, fashion and culture that it usually influences me to design after it.

Any current fashion trends you are swooning over?

Earrings, I can’t get enough. Vintage Levis, cropped wide leg jeans, and Le Labo candles and anything Dolce & Gabbana.

What's next for you?

Our 2017 Collection Bella Italia will be out next month. Im planning a trip to Hawaii for a little inspiration and R&R. As well as lots more collaborations and special editions to come!
