For those of you who get migraines, this might be worth a read.
For years now I have gotten migraines multiple times a week, leading me to toss back Excedrin like tic-tacs (more accurately for my lifestyle, M&Ms). I chalked up my migraines to likely be caused by hormones, which didn't really make sense due to their frequency, but because I don't eat much dairy, meat, etc. I didn't think it was food related.
About a month ago, my doctor brought up my caffeine consumption. I've never been a serious coffee drinker, but I do usually start my day with a caffeinated beverage of sorts (coffee, matcha, black tea, etc.). She suggested that caffeine might be the culprit (*GASP*) of my chronic migraines. I was on a rollercoaster of caffeine spikes & drops aided by my morning coffee and afternoon Excedrin (which also contains caffeine). She suggested I quit drinking caffeine over the course of a few days (going cold turkey can lead to some major splitters) and I figured, what the hell- while I would miss going out for a nice matcha latte, having no more throbbing pain in my skull would be a decent trade off.
Day 1 was okay- a little pain but easily knocked out by an Aspirin. Day 2 was a motherf***er and required one of my prescription migraine pills. Day 3 was....fine! I slept better than I had in a while & spent my day migraine free. Here I am, one month later and I'm amazed to find that I have been okay without taking an Excedrin once. The game has been changed! SO EXCITING!!!!
That being said, I instantly missed waking up and having a cup of something warm. I posted on my Instagram stories asking you all what suggestions you had for non-caffeinated coffee-like replacements and got a few great suggestions, which led me down a Google rabbit hole. Ultimately I decided to buy a few different healthy, medicinals powders from my favorite holistic lifestyle brand Moon Juice
that all blend together to be pretty damn good!
I wanted to share my daily concoction with you here. Even if it's not replacing coffee in your life, you'll feel great drinking something that makes you feel more alert, healthy, and clean.
My Morning Blend
What You'll Need:
- 1 Cup Almond Milk or milk of choice
- 1 tsp Cordyceps (increases cellular oxygen absorption/immune boost)
- 1 tsp Chaga (protects against DNA damage & supports glowing skin)
- 1 tsp Mucuna Pruriens (elevates mood, soothes nervous system)
- 1 tsp Pearl (natural source of enzymes, beautifying antioxidant)
- Cinnamon to taste
- Matcha whisk or emulsion blender
What To Do:
- Heat Almond Milk on stove top on medium/low- hold your hand over the pot to feel when it's getting warm
- Add all dry ingredients
- Whisk with matcha whisk or emulsion blender while warm
- Wait for Almond Milk to begin to bubble around the edges
- Remove from heat and pour into your favorite mug
The whole process takes about 3 minutes maximum so it's really quick and easy. I have a slew of different ingredients that I mix together depending on the day. I highly suggest adding cinnamon (I also got a Pumpkin Spice mix that's really great) to give it some added flavor.
